Free to generate own power, but mind the neighbours

With more episodes of loadshedding looming, the City of Cape Town has outlined the conditions for residents who are thinking of buying a generator. According to Ernest Sonnenberg, mayoral committee member for utility services, all installations of generators must be safe and legal.

Sonnenberg says in a statement that permission from the City’s electricity services department is only needed if the standby generator is going to be synchronised or connected to the City’s electrical network. If the generator is to be operated in isolation from the City’s network, as will be the case in the vast majority of residential generator installations, permission is not required.

“The City does, however, recommend that an electrician install it.”

Residents should also ensure that their generators are not too noisy. Care should be taken that noise emanating from their property does not cause a disturbance. If the City receives a complaint, a notice to cease will be issued.

“I appeal to residents with generators to please take extra care to soundproof their devices. In times of loadshedding, when tensions are already running high, this kind of noise disturbance can test even the most patient among us,” says Sonnenberg.

He adds that residents should also be considerate about emissions that their generator might give off. If any resident feels that the smell or smoke of their neighbour’s generator is causing a nuisance, they are welcome to submit a complaint
