The Elmarie street committee has taken a different approach to financing its holiday programme.

With several goods donated and acquired, Elmarie Crescent was closed off and tables laid out for a garage sale on Saturday last week.

The aim of the event was to raise funds for the street committee’s winter holiday programme.

From clothing to toys, and even books, it was a bargain hunter’s dream.

In the end the committee made more than R2000 towards the project.

Roellien Johnson, who assisted in organising the event, says it was a huge success. “Most of the residents came out to support the cause and bought goods.”

With the money raised they aim to feed children during their holiday programme and are planning to do their programme after the local mosque and church complete their respective programmes.

“We have not settled on dates yet but plans are in motion,” she says.

“We want to set up games and run an ‘adopt-a-child’ programme. We want the older children to help the young ones with their schoolwork and also have games and a hot meal,” she says.

Johnson says they may have the programme for a week closer to the end of the school holidays
