Getting guns off the streets

2015-05-05 06:00

Hanover Park residents have become used to the sound of gun shots in recent months.

This, police say, is the driving force behind increased efforts to bring the perpetrators to book.

On Tuesday 17 March at 15:00 Philippi police received a tip-off of suspicious activities and acted swiftly.

In Lonedown Walk, police noticed a man matching the description given in the tip, says spokesperson Lieutenant Lance Goliath.

“He was approached and searched. During the search police seized a 9mm Browning pistol, live 9mm ammunition and two magazines. The serial number of the pistol was filed off,” he says.

The suspect was arrested for the illegal possession of a firearm and ammunition.

The suspect will soon appear in the Athlone Magistrate’s Court.

Anyone with information on crime are urged to call the police station on 021 695 1500 or CrimeStop on 086 001 0111.
