Girl (17) and man killed on weekend

A 17-year-old girl was killed, allegedly in gang violence, in Ocean View this weekend.

Community Police Forum (CPF) chairperson Kathy Cronje describing her death as a “senseless murder”.

This follows reports of gang-related shootings every day for almost two weeks, Cronje says. On Monday morning last week alone about six shots were heard, she says.

“When is it going to stop? It is getting progressively worse, and nobody seems to be able to do anything about it. How are we going to protect our families and our children?” she says.

Lieutenant-Colonel Jakobus Augus, commander of the Ocean View police station, confirms a young woman and a man were murdered over the weekend, but says these cannot be linked to gang activity.

In response to the shootings, the CPF will be holding a march against violence, crime, illegal guns, drugs and gangsterism.

The march will begin at the Kommetjie Road entrance to Ocean View on Friday just before 19:00. All neighbourhood watches, security companies, religious organisations, members of the public and NGOs are invited to attend
