Good Hope tenants get help

2015-04-30 14:45

Long-standing tenants of the Good Hope Centre have been offered help to find new venues for their events.

This follows a decision to consider alternative uses for the centre, which is too costly to maintain, says Garreth Bloor, mayoral committee member for tourism, events and economic development.

“Currently, it costs more than R5m per year to operate, while income is less than R3m per year,” he says.

Users of the centre have been advised that the City will suggest other suitable City-owned venues. “In addition, the City would provide financial support for either public or privately owned venues, where the costs of alternative locations were disproportionate to the preferred venue, should that be required,” he says.

Regulations allow the City to make an upfront decision to free up an asset, such as the Good Hope Centre. Once the lease proposal is advertised for comment, objections or competitive options must be considered before the final decision is made.

“A final decision then needs to be made either in support of or against the leasing of the Good Hope Centre,” he says.

A public participation process must take place. This process can take place in no particular order, so that the lease agreement conditions can first be finalised before the public participation.

“Either way, I would like to assure communities that they will have an opportunity to comment about the proposal to lease the Good Hope Centre to the film industry,” he says
