Hands off our wheelie bins

2015-06-16 06:00

With an increase in bin thefts, subcouncil 23 has taken a zero-tolerance approach to people pushing wheelie bins in public areas, the subcouncil says in a statement.

Residents are encouraged to report this illegal activity.

The subcouncil is partnering with City law enforcement and the solid waste management department to clamp down on wheelie bin theft. Their operations are directed by complaints received.

To date, 35 bins have been impounded, 13 bins have been checked for ownership, 6 abandoned bins have been recovered, 34 stop-and-searches have been carried out and one person was arrested with drugs.

Residents can report any suspicious activity to law enforcement on 021 596 1999.

Subcouncil 23 chairperson Natalie Bent will host a meeting with the police, the community policing forum, the local neighbourhood watch and street committees to see how the City can work with these groups to further curb the theft.V
