Hijacking in driveway foiled

Police have charged two men for attempted hijacking in Bergvliet after they were cornered and arrested last week.

The attempted hijacking occurred in Eagle Way as a resident was reversing out of his driveway.

Sergeant Deidre Solomon, spokesperson of Kirstenhof police station, says he was approached by two men in his driveway.

“One of the men came to the driver’s side of the car and had what seemed to be a 9mm pistol. When the victim saw the pistol he pressed on the car’s hooter to alert the neighbours and this caused the suspects to flee the scene,” she says.

A worker on a neighbour’s premises witnessed what was happening and pressed the panic button.

“The victim, together with the worker, gave chase and alerted BH Security who were in the vicinity. The suspects were then cornered in a local bottle store where they were apprehended and taken to Kirstenhof police,” she says.

The weapon was later discovered to be a replica of a 9mm firearm.

The two suspects from Gugulethu were charged and appeared in the Wynberg Magistrates’ Court.

Commander of Kirstenhof police station Lieutenant-Colonel June Cilliers has applauded the actions of the bystander and the security company.

“Actions of both once again emphasised the importance of close communication between the community, security companies and police,” she says.

Mandrax arrest

In another incident Kirstenhof’s crime prevention unit was attending a community meeting in Westlake on Thursday 29 October when they spotted a known drug dealer walking in the area.

Solomon says the officers stopped the 52-year-old suspect who was found to be in possession of 52 mandrax tablets.

“He was detained and charged for being in possession of drugs and appeared in the Wynberg Magistrates’ Court on Friday 30 October.”V Anyone with information on crime can call the police on 10111 or Crime Stop on 086 001 0111.
