The comic opera The Mikado will be staged in Cape Town for the first time in 20 years this month.

The Cape Town Gilbert and Sullivan Society will be presenting the production, accompanied by the Cape Town Philharmonic Orchestra, in the Artscape Theatre from this Saturday to Sunday 26 July.

Set in Japan, The Mikado is a wonderful opportunity to create spectacular sets and costumes. Big, colourful characters and songs make this a hilarious opera full of silliness.

The production is directed by Roché Haupt-Buckle with musical direction by Alastair Cockburn, while the vibrant dance numbers will be choreographed by Roxy Levy.

The set is designed by Michélle Hough and Jaco Janse van Rensburg and the colourful costumes by Kristine Berg. Lighting and sound designs are by Faheem Bardien and Liam Cookson respectively.

Together with the Cape Town Philharmonic Orchestra, the cast will perform well-known show stoppers like “A wand’ring minstrel”, “I’ve got a little list” and “Three little maids from school”.V

Performance times vary and tickets, from R90 to R260, are available from Computicket with family and block booking discounts available. Pensioners and students get a 20% discount with proof of status for tickets bought 45 minutes prior to a performance
