The Bridgetown Theatre Company (BTC) recently announced its newly appointed board and two new productions to be staged this year.

The BTC will hold auditions for actors, singers, musicians and dancers between the ages of 12 and 70 years for two productions: The comedy Loadshedding and the musical dance drama Cool. They are to be staged across the Western Cape in July and August.

No previous acting, dancing or music experience is required.

The successful performers will have to be available for rehearsals on Tuesdays and Thursdays from 18:00 to 20:00 and Saturdays from 11:00 to 14:00 from 2 May.

The newly elected board members are Vernon Piedt (chairperson), Fowzia Khan (vice chairperson), Shariefa Wagner (finance), Zelda Hintsa (marketing) and Ziona Theron and Carmen Mentor (both project coordinators).

According to Piedt the vision for the BTC is to bring about “meaningful change” for all involved in the local creative (arts) sector. “We want the public to share in our vision to realise our goal of making the arts and culture accessible to all communities and especially building a new legacy in the arts and culture fraternity for our future generation,” Piedt says.

“Our Bridgetown and whole of Athone area might not have the infrastructure and facilities that are synonymous with many of Cape Town’s affluent areas, but one of the many good things it has going for it, is that it has an arts and culture history it can be proud of,” says Mentor.

The BTC teaches people to become performers of music (singing and instruments), as well as all forms of dance and acting.

The BTC has staged many productions since its inception in 2009, such as the musical Engliekaans, comedies Four weddings en ’n Janaazah and Blowing candles and dance drama Strive to move

. It has also participated in the Cape Town Carnival since 2010.

Both productions, Loadshedding and Cool, will be performed as one-hour shows on weekends from 2 July to 2 August in various towns across the Western Cape. The final performance will be held at the Joseph Stone auditorium in Athlone on Sunday 2 August
