The Lipton Challenge Cup, South Africa’s most prestigious sailing event of the year, is being sailed in Table Bay this week, concluding on Friday.

Amongst the seasoned sailors taking part are some of South Africa’s top sailors, as well as some junior teams.

Youngest crew memberOne of the junior teams sailing and holding their own against some of South Africa’s most experienced sailors is Team Skybound.

Skippered by Eben Vivier (21) with twin brother Johan Vivier as the tactician, Team Skybound also boasts the youngest crew member of all the teams competing in Lipton Cup – Seaton Bailey, who is only 13 years old.

The other team members are Marc Robert von Schutz (21), Joppie Naude (20), ­Duane Petersen (22) and Shannon Cupido (19).

Duane and Shannon both hail from Grassy Park and are active and talented young sailors who sail dinghies at Zeekoe­vlei yacht club and keelboats at the Royal Cape yacht club sailing academy.

There are 16 teams from around South Africa competing in this year’s Lipton Challenge Cup, including three teams from the Vaal and one from as far as Richard’s Bay.
