Kenwyn residents managed to gather a group of people on Sunday to do another clean-up at the Kenwyn Nature Park on Sunday.

Residents braved the elements and donned their Wellies to clean up the water-logged area.

Dylan Barsby from the Friends of Kenilworth Racecourse Conservation Area said the Kenwyn Nature Park is a community initiative to turn Chukker Road Open Space into a nature park.

“We also want to use the space for biodiversity awareness as well as for use by the community and even by shoppers from Access Park and Kenilworth Centre because the land is situated right next door to a major shopping hub. The beauty of this proposal is that, not only is it likely to be sustainable, but it actually kills many birds with one stone,” Barsby said.

In terms of biodiversity, Barsby explains that the park would conserve critically endangered Cape Flats Sand Fynbos and Cape Lowland Freshwater Wetlands.

“It also lies exactly on the M5 biodiversity corridor, plugging a gap in this string of nature reserves. This corridor is also a River Corridor. The Kromboom River has its upper reaches in the proposed Kenwyn park before flowing northwards along the M5, joining Black River at the Two Rivers Urban Park. The health of any river system depends on its upper reaches, so our park is crucial,” he explains.

The proposed conservation area will also incorporate environmental education as the space lies alongside Oaklands High School which has shown an enormous interest in the environment and has even attempted to construct its own wetland on the school property,” Barsby adds.

He adds the community has also expressed having a simple circular asphalt-cycling and jogging track.

“Of course this would serve to bring the community into the space, but a circular track also protects biodiversity, by acting as a buffer against weeds,” he says
