The Strandfontein National Sea Rescue Institute has received a cash boost following Robin Fortuin’s win as the Centrum Guardian for the year.

He was rewarded for his amazing rescue feat when, against all odds, he saved six lives at sea.

He received R5 000 as winner. The NSRI Strandfontein base station received R60 000.

Mario Fredericks, station commander for the NSRI Strandfontein rescue base, said: “We are so grateful to Centrum for this opportunity and congratulate Robin. Thank you to the voters for acknowledging Robin’s efforts.

“As we are a voluntary institution, the prize money will open many doors. We will be putting the prize money to good use in the form of new training aids and specialised equipment for the area we work in. We will also upgrade some of the facilities at the station.

The Centrum Guardians award was created to honour South Africa’s rescuers.

“We congratulate Robin. His story inspired us and reinforced our belief that the South African emergency services are world-class,” said Natasha Macdonald, the Centrum brand manager. V
