Locals tackle gangs

2015-08-04 06:01

The frustration of residents of Parkwood and Ottery has reached boiling point.

A group of residents from Parkwood recently held a picketing protest outside the Grassy Park police station.

Voice of Parkwood chairperson Paul Phillips says the protest was held after shootings in the area the past few weeks.

“We have had enough and decided that we would hold a protest at the police station. We are losing too many lives in our community and we want our police to do something about it,” Phillips says.

Community leaders and residents took their concerns a step further on Thursday when they approached a well-known alleged gangster.

Ward councillor Melanie Arendse says the man was approached after he threatened a youngster.

“We gathered a few mothers in the area who lost children to gang violence as well. We will not allow this any more and are tackling the issues head-on,” she says.

According to Arendse the youngster who was threatened is an “upstanding boy in the community”. “This man threatened the young man saying ‘you’re next to fall’. This is a term used by gangsters when they warn of a person’s demise,” she says.

Phillips says they warned the alleged gangster that they would remove him from the community if he doesn’t stop.

“We will come with a truck to his residence and remove him and his family. We have a mandate from the community to keep it safe and we will not negotiate with gangsters,” Phillips says.

Grassy Park police spokesperson Warrant Officer Wynita Kleinsmith says a shooting occurred over the weekend but no case was opened for investigation, because no-one has come forward as complainant.

Kleinsmith says other police work continues in the area. “Raids and specialised operations are conducted and houses are searched during these operations. Visible patrols has been sharpened up as well,” she says.
