A 23-year-old man was arrested on Friday morning for having an illegal gun, which was found to have been used in an attempted murder.

Philippi police spokesperson Lieutenant Lance Goliath says the suspect was apprehended by metro police in Oribi Court, Hanover Park at 08:15.

Members of metro police were patrolling around Oribi Court when they noticed two men. One of them started walking away from the officers and then stopped to help a resident hang up laundry. Officers thought his behaviour strange, says JP Smith, mayoral committee member for safety and security.

Police managed to stop him. Upon searching him they seized a 9mm CZ 75 pistol and 11 rounds of ammunition. The serial number of the pistol had been filed off.

Police arrested the man for the possession of an illegal firearm and ammunition.

“The officers are to be commended for their vigilance and pushing through to remove a dangerous, wanted suspect from the streets. He probably drew more attention to himself when he pretended to help with the washing, because in the end he hung himself out to dry,” Smith says.

Wanted suspectGoliath adds that upon further investigation at the Philippi police station, police determined that the suspect was wanted in a case of attempted murder which had occurred in Pinati Estate at the beginning of last month.

“A 19-year-old man was shot in the leg in Gateway Crescent, Pinati Estate. The suspect is due to appear in the Athlone Magistrates’ Court on charges of illegal possession of a firearm and ammunition as well as attempted murder,” Goliath explains.

“This arrest and confiscation of the firearm and ammunition is yet another blow to the criminal world and those operating it. The long arm of the law also prevailed as the suspect was still at large for the attempted murder,” he adds.

Police station commander Lieutenant-Colonel Desmond Laing has thanked the members for a job well done.

Strengthening the partnership between the community and the police is high on the agenda, he says.
