A 48-year-old Westlake resident died last week after he was hit over the head with a spade, allegedly by his stepson.

The incident occurred on Thursday when the stepson intervened in an argument between the victim and the stepson’s mother.

Sergeant Deidre Solomon, spokesperson of Kirstenhof police station, says the suspect became aggressive and grabbed a spade, which was in the garden, and hit the victim over the head.

“The victim died on the scene as a result of the injury,” she says.

Solomon says after the suspect hit the victim over the head he fled the scene.

However, through fast detective work and the assistance of the community the suspect was arrested on Friday, the day after the incident.

Solomon says the 28-year-old suspect from Westlake was detained and will be charged with murder.

He appeared in the Wynberg Magistrates’ Court yesterday.

Robs shop, goes to prisonMeanwhile, Warrant Officer Theron of Kirstenhof police station’s detective branch managed to secure a straight eight-year conviction for a robber.

Solomon explains that in March the robber from Lavender Hill entered the Framing Centre shop and asked an employee who was working at the till what the closing time was.

The 43-year-old robber later returned to the shop and pretended to be interested in purchasing a frame.

“On his return the suspect threatened the victim with a knife and when the victim reached for the panic button the suspect reached for the cash that was in the till,” she says.

The robber managed to flee the scene with R380 cash.

However, he was later linked to the crime through his fingerprints and was detained and charged with business robbery.

He was remanded until the case was finalised. Bail was denied.

On Wednesday 28 October the robber was sentenced to eight years in prison.
