The Steenberg police recently arrested six suspects for various crimes in the area.

In the most recent incident a 35-year-old man was arrested on Sunday last week in connection with an armed robbery in Retreat Road the previous evening.

Constable Zodwa Kedema, spokesperson of the Steenberg police, says the victim says he was standing next to his car in Retreat Road on Saturday night when a white Toyota Tazz parked next to him.

“One of the occupants got out. He took out a knife and threatened the complainant,” she says. The complainant then handed over his wallet and the suspects drove off.

One suspect was arrested for robbery and appeared in Wynberg Magistrates’ Court the following day.

In a separate incident a woman and her friend were robbed of their cellphones in Retreat on the recent public holiday. They were approached and robbed by two men.

Kedama says the police arrested a 34-year-old man from Retreat. He has appeared in Wynberg Magistrates’ Court.

Special operation

The Steenberg police followed up on a tip-off about drugs being sold at a property in Lavender Hill and arrested a 45-year-old man there for possession of drugs.

Upon searching the house on Thursday morning last week the police found six stops of dagga, an unknown amount of dagga in a parcel and 62 mandrax half-tablets.

The suspect has already appeared in Wynberg Magistrates’ Court.

In a separate crime prevention operation a 41-year-old man was arrested on Wednesday evening last week.

Kedama says the police were busy with crime prevention duties when they saw a man running away from the patrol van.

“The police gave chase and he was apprehended and found in possession of a Star 9mm firearm and one magazine with 15 9mm rounds,” she says.

The firearm was tested and it was discovered that it had been reported stolen in 2007.

The suspect, from Lavender Hill, has appeared in Wynberg Magistrates’ Court.

Drug dealing

The police arrested a 30-year-old man for possession of and dealing in drugs during a routine patrol in the Steenberg area.

“The arrest occurred on Friday 19 June at about 08:45. As the police were busy with patrols they stopped and searched the suspect who looked suspicious,” Kedama says.

He was found in possession of five stops of dagga, 16 packets of tik and R200.

He was arrested and has already appeared in Wynberg Magistrates’s Court.

Business robbery

A 30-year-old man was arrested on Monday 15 June for a business robbery in 7th Avenue. According to information received by the police, 7de Laan Cellular Shop was robbed in April when six suspects entered the shop and started looting the business.

“They took a Samsung E250 cellphone, music box and a laptop charger. They fled the scene on foot,” she says.

The suspect has already appeared in Wynberg Magistrates’ Court
