Manager stages ‘robbery’

A manager of a restaurant in Lower Main Road in Observatory has been arrested after lying about a business robbery.

The arrest comes on the back of an intense police investigation into the alleged business robbery that he had reported.

The 32-year-old manager alleged that when he opened the business one morning he was accosted by two unknown men and a woman. They threatened him with a knife and demanded cash and valuable items. The manager alleged the robbers stole about R4500 out of the cash register, airtime and expensive alcohol, before fleeing the scene on foot in an unknown direction.

Detectives obtained surveillance footage which revealed that the complainant had lied and that there had never been a robbery.

The investigation brought to light that the manager had visited the business at about 03:00 on the morning of the “robbery” and had spent about 15 to 20 minutes inside before he locked the premises up again.

The manager admitted to detectives that he had falsely opened a case to claim money from insurance. He had staged the crime scene himself during his early morning visit.

Sergeant Hilton Malila of the Woodstock police station says they opened a perjury case and arrested the manager. The suspect appeared in the Cape Town Magistrates’ Court on Thursday last week.

The Woodstock police warn the public to not report false cases for insurance claims, because they will be prosecuted
