Many arrested for drug deals

The Steenberg police report that 44 people have been arrested for possession of drugs in the last week.

Constable Zodwa Kedama, spokesperson of the Steenberg police, says the arrests were made during various police operations between Monday 11 May and Sunday.

Kedama says 21 homes were searched for drugs and 44 arrests were made.

“We confiscated 210 packets of tik, 250 mandrax tablets and 598 stops of dagga,” she says.

Kedama says the police conducted a search at a spaza shop on Tuesday last week at about 13:20 when they found a 24-year-old suspect in possession of 33 half mandrax tablets and 56 stops of dagga.

“He appeared in Wynberg Magistrates’ Court on Wednesday,” she says.

Patrol, then arrestThe police were doing patrols on Wednesday last week at about 15:00 when they searched a 46-year-old man and found 10 mandrax tablets in his possession.

“He appeared in Wynberg Magistrates’ Court on Thursday,” she says.

A third person was arrested in a separate incident on Thursday last week.

Kedama says the police followed up on information about a drug outlet in Lavender Hill at 11:35.

“On arrival police searched a 35-year-old man from Lavender Hill and confiscated 145 packets of crystal meth, 102 mandrax tablets and 60 half mandrax tablets.

“The suspect is currently detained at Steenberg for charges relating to dealing in drugs,” Kedama says.

Spazas searched

Shebeen operations were also conducted last week and arrests were made for selling liquor without licence. Liquor was also confiscated.

“While conducting a compliance inspection, 40 spaza shops were searched and three arrests were made for possession of counterfeit cigarettes,” she says.

In another arrest two suspects aged 18 and 30 years were arrested in Steenberg for being in possession of an imitation firearm.

Three more suspects were arrested for illegal posession of firearms.

“Police in Steenberg confiscated three firearms and arrested three suspects for the illegal possession of firearms and ammunition,” Kedama says. They appeared in Wynberg Magistrates’ Court
