Neighbours can help on rubbish day

2015-11-03 06:00

I have read the letter “Just minutes to clean up rubbish” by Lynn van Leeve (People’s Post, 27 October) .

May I take a moment to share what we as residents do in Welcome Estate, Athlone.

We have a very successful “bin buddy” system, which basically entails: If you are working leave your bin with a neighbour on his premises.

Your neighbour who is home will take out your bin on arrival of the collection trucks and bring it onto his premises until you get home.

This will alleviate unwanted visitors in the road, leave zero mess to clean up and avoid bin theft and those characters who are there to see who is home and who not. This will lead to fewer burglaries in the area.

It is also a great way to get to know who our neighbours are. High walls, electric fencing, big dogs, etc. are cutting off our neighbourly interactions.

It is worth trying.
