A new subforum has been elected at the recent Steenberg police sector 3 subforum annual meeting.

Residents from the sector voted for the candidates at the Steenberg Community Centre on Tuesday last week. They will head safety and security and community projects in the area, working with Steenberg sector 3 commander Warrant Officer Donavon Constant.

Constant said during the meeting he was excited to work with the new team that had been elected on the night.

“The task that lies ahead of us will be a tough one but we will make it a success. As a subforum you represent your community and will address crime issues alongside the police,” he said.

Constant added that residents, together with the subforum and police, should make a concerted effort to keep crime out of the area.

“The aim with a new subforum is crime prevention. This year is definitely a year for change and we will ensure that our communities are safer for everybody,” he said.

Constant said all residents in the area will be taken into consideration when it comes to crime prevention.

“There are plans to incorporate school and crèche visits as well. We want our people to feel that they are taken care of and can rely on us for their safety,” Constant added.

He also encouraged residents to take the initiative to start street committees.

“Residents need to start taking back their streets and taking responsibility for their communities. We have at least three neighbourhood watches in sector three but we need visibility to be more concentrated,” he added.

The newly elected subforum has Alan de Koker as chairperson and Faizel Cozette as deputy chairperson.

De Koker will be standing as the chairperson of the subforum for the next year and has taken over the duties of outgoing chairperson Mark Jacobs, who served as the chairperson for four years.

“I am grateful for the trust displayed in me when chosen as the chairperson of the subforum. As we sit here (tonight) we are all leaders as we have shown an interest in our community,” he said. V
