The Sun Valley mall is expected to open before Christmas, as final design details are made available to local ratepayers.

The development, which is already underway, is expected to be completed by November and will accommodate anchor tenant Checkers Hyper, with Liquor Shop, and a free-standing Virgin Active Health Club. Negotiations for other tenants are happening and include a drive-thru fastfood restaurant and a national health and beauty retailer, a spokesperson from the Checkers Group confirms.

The Checkers Hyper is being heralded as a flagship store combining “value expected from a hypermarket on a full range of consumer food and general merchandise under one roof together with a more convenient shopping experience”, the group says in a statement.

“With the new-generation Hyper, consumers will find anything from a bicycle to a panini, a camping gazebo to Chianti wine straight from Italy, all complemented by fresh food service departments offering quality gourmet food – without the cumbersome shopping experience of the hypermarkets of old,” the statement says.

The mall will boast a number of green technologies, including efficient lighting and the use of heat pumps instead of geysers. Various engineering concepts have been employed to minimise sound pollution and the roof insulation has been improved to reduce heat radiation.

The external walls will have various finishes, such as glass, specialised coatings, colour and texture variations, trellis and planted sections. External awnings will be installed above shop fronts and lighting in the parking area will be decorative pole-mounted light fittings with energy-efficient lamps.

The roof has skylights at specific points to provide natural lighting inside. The roof design will aim to conceal air conditioning and the refrigeration plant from sight when viewed from various vantage points.

There will be 950 open parking bays with reserved spaces for customers with disabilities and mothers with toddlers. A traffic impact assessment has found that the anticipated redevelopment plan will improve traffic flow in and around the area, the statement says.

The Checkers Group has committed itself to rehabilitate the wetland adjacent to the shopping centre in partnership with the relevant authorities. During the construction phase approximately 150 direct job opportunities are being created along with numerous indirect opportunities. Once the mall opens for trade, an estimated 400 – 450 employment opportunities will be created
