No dogs allowed on Burghers’ Walk

2015-08-25 06:00

A temporary ban on dogs has been placed, with immediate effect, along Burghers’ Walk to Links Crescent after eight African pengins were killed by dogs.

This comes in response to the death the endangered African penguins, killed by dogs, in this section of coast last week.

Recent nest counts of breeding penguins indicate that of the 982 nests counted, 109 nests are located just along Burghers’ Walk and the areas immediately south of Burghers’ Walk.

These measures will remain in place until further notice. Dog owners and dog walkers are requested to be responsible when walking their dogs on a leash in sensitive areas across the city and to ensure that they are able to control their animals at all times.

City Law Enforcement will be enforcing the Animal Bylaw. Members of the public who observe unaccompanied dogs in the Burghers’ Walk area are urged to report this to City Law Enforcement on 021 596 1999
