Nominate crime fighters for new awards

One of the chief ways to recognise the important role that neighbourhood watches play in providing an additional safety net for communities is by awarding them for this outstanding community service.

This is according to Hylton Mitchell, chairperson of the Neighbourhood Watch Awards committee.

“The Neighbourhood Watch Awards are not a contest between neighbourhood watch volunteers or associations, but is rather an opportunity to recognise the tireless work being done by dedicated volunteers and active neighbourhood watch groups in the fight against increasing crime levels in our respective communities,” he says.

Mitchell says the inaugural awards recognise these dedicated individuals and is a platform to shine a light on the often dark corners the volunteers operate in.

“Accordingly, we invite neighbourhood watch formations, members and the public to nominate outstanding volunteers and formations in seven official categories, including Member of the Year, the Safe City Award and the Community Cohesion Award,” he says.

Nominees should be registered neighbourhood watch volunteers, who are part of a registered watch structure, community police forum or a crime-fighting forum registered with local police in Cape Town.

The awards website at www.nhw provides a list of criteria for each category.

Nominations may be submitted using a web form and includes the nominee’s name, current affiliation and contact information, as well as a 200-word summary explaining why he deserves to win the award in a particular category.

The deadline for nominations is Friday 13 November at 17:00.

The handing out of the awards will be preceded by a neighbourhood watch education week from Monday 23 to Friday 27 November as an opportunity to engage the public on watch activities and increasing public safety in Cape Town.

The awards ceremony will be held in the city centre on 27 November.
