The Mitchell’s Plain hiking club has been launched with its first successful hike on Table Mountain.

Almost 100 participants ventured the Pipe Trail on Saturday 18 April in what was the official start to the Mitchell’s Plain Enviro Hiking Club.

The group was joined by the Bonteheuwel Enviro Hiking club. The event was facilitated by The Hikers Network.

The project forms part of the Mitchell’s Plain Community Police Forum’s (CPF) five-year development plan.

CPF chairperson Abie Isaacs says the project is one of three anchor projects running in the precinct.

“We are looking at the five key areas that we have marked out and this is focussing mainly on the youth. This is about allowing the youth to become acquainted with nature and is about education,” he says.

On the first trip a group of youth at risk from Tafelsig accompanied the organisers.

“The trip was about discipline. Our aim is to focus on hotspot areas in Mitchell’s Plain,” he says.

The group aims to meet for a monthly hike.

The second trip will take place on Saturday 16 May.

“Our next hike has already been planned for Constantia Neck and we are looking forward to drumming up more support for the club,” he says.

The hiking club will visit a scenic route every month and although the trip is focused on youth all are welcome to attend.

Isaacs says the aim is to explore and learn about nature conservation and plant life outside of the concrete jungle.

“We live between the Helderberg mountains and Table Mountain with the coast beside us. We want all project coordinators to think outside the box when it comes to the projects in Mitchell’s Plain,” he says.

Isaacs adds that the club is part of a sustainable project.

According to Isaacs, the group enjoyed the hike.
