A 32-year-old man was arrested for the illegal possession of a firearm on Wednesday last week just after 05:00.

Manenberg police spokesperson Lieutenant Ian Bennett says the man was arrested with a 9mm pistol after extra members were “deployed to combat the gang situation within the area”.

“Members of Manenberg police detectives were busy with tracing of wanted suspects within the area. They went to an address in Seine Walk where they spotted a group of ten men standing on the corner. As the police members approached them one of the men turned around and started to run,” Bennett says.

He adds the suspect who ran was seen throwing an object over a wall.

“Members managed to corner the man and they then retrieved the item that was thrown over the wall which was a 9mm pistol police-issued firearm,” Bennett confirms.

The 32-year-old male was arrested and will be appearing in court soon.

Bennett says police members have been deployed in the area to step up operations, increase visibility and to conduct stop-and-searches.

“[We are] creating disruptive operations so that gangs don’t have the freedom to move around.”

Manenberg station commander Brigadier Andre van Dyk says he will continue to encourage the community to get involved in active policing in which the community can ensure the safety of residents.
