The contractor at the Retreat swimming pool promises that he will be finished in early September.

This is according to Belinda Walker, mayoral committee member for community services and special projects. “This is, however, dependent on the weather as the contractor is still affected by adverse weather conditions preventing him from working,” she says. The pool will be opened for use shortly after the contractor has completed his work, Walker says.

People’s Post previously reported that construction at the Retreat swimming pool was set to be completed by December last year (“In the swim”, 2 September 2014). The construction at the pool site started in 2013.

The former ward councillor, Jan Burger, said last year that although the construction was a lengthy process the community looked forward to the new pool as a recreational site.

Walker says the contractor has taken steps to overcome his capacity constraints. “In this regard they have appointed a construction manager to oversee the management of the project and the completion of the works. The City is monitoring the progress closely and continually applying pressure on the contractor to keep to their schedule and complete the project,” Walker says.

She says that there has been no extra cost to the City for the delay. “The City is in fact charging the contractor penalties for the late delivery of the project, which we are entitled to do in terms of the construction contract,” she says.

Walker further says the main structure over the main pool is just about complete, with all of the major components having been installed and the roof sheeting should therefore be able to commence shortly.

The current tariffs of R6 for adults and R1.50 for children will remain until July next year
