Lovers of hip-hop, gather your dance crew and start putting together those hip-hop moves that will get you noticed – it’s time for the Interschool Hip-hop Dance competition!

The 021 BDC (Best Dance Crew) competition is aimed at keeping youths active and will be happening on Saturday 8 August. Pupils from both primary and high schools are invited to take part.

According to David Cornelson of Project 021, the benefits of events like these have been amazing.

“The pupils develop creative skills as well as confidence to pursue their dreams. The strategy is for groups to work together, especially during the school holidays, in order to prepare for the event. In this way young people will be occupied with constructive activities which keeps them focused.”

Project 021 is a non-profit organisation, which seeks to create social change and provide skills development through performing arts.

“Project 021 was established to develop young people through creative arts in public schools. We understand the importance of developing pupils’ creative abilities, and therefore we create opportunities to unearth, develop and show-case their talents,” says Cornelson.

He adds that Project 021 offers dance and drama classes to schools and community organisations, to give individuals the opportunity to be trained to express themselves through the arts.

“To this end we create events, such as 021 BDC, which creates a platform for young people to exhibit their talents.”

Workshops will be held during the school holidays to help groups to get their respective pieces ready for the competition.

Cornelson says about 90 young people participated in the event last year and it is estimated that at least 150 pupils will take part this year.

Dance crews stand a chance to take top honours in the following categories:

. Best High School Crew

. Best Primary School Crew

. Best High School Male

. Best High School Female

. Best Primary School Male

. Best Primary School Female

. Best Supported School

The event will be hosted at the Joseph Stone auditorium in Athlone
