Local celebrities raised R100 000 for charity and announced South Africa’s new boerewors champion.

George Baloyi (52) from Soshanguve, Gauteng, was voted the winner of the prestigious 2015 Championship Boerewors competition.

His boerewors recipe will now be used for Championship Boerewors sold in all Shoprite, Checkers and Checkers Hyper stores where the equivalent of 8 220km boerewors – the distance between Cape Town and Mumbai (India) – was sold during the group’s previous financial year.

This was Baloyi’s fifth entry into the competition, but the first time he made it into the final round.

Baloyi started making boerewors 25 years ago when he worked at a butchery in Pretoria. Years of practice finally paid off when he won a new Hilux 2.7 Double Cab Raised Body L45.

Baloyi’s name was revealed on Tuesday 15 September by personalities Marc Lottering, Corné Krige and Tol Ass Mo.

They planned to sky dive to show their love for boerewors, but the jump was cancelled due to poor weather.

However, the three celebs will still be donating the funds to charity in partnership with Shoprite/Checkers.

Each celeb chose a charity, and the funds will be donated to Wake Up and Feed a Child, Feed SA and Feed a Child.

This is the 23rd Championship Boerewors competition.

This year 794 would-be champs entered the competition. After recipe verification, 650 recipes were judged at the six Champion Rounds.
