Robbers prowlin white taxi

2015-04-30 14:47

Police in the southern suburbs have appealed to residents to watch out for taxis seen driving outside normal taxi routes.

This follows several robbery cases in which victims have been held up at knifepoint by two men in a white taxi.

In the most recent case a 20-year-old student was robbed on the corners of Melville and Garden streets on Monday 13 April at about 13:10.

Diep River police spokesperson Warrant Officer Keith Chandler says one of the men jumped out of the taxi and held the student at knifepoint, demanding he hand over his valuables.

“They took a backpack which contained his textbooks, cellphone, wallet, jacket and other items,” he says.

Chandler confirms there have been similar reports in Claremont, Wynberg, Mowbray and Rondebosch.

“We strongly advise residents to be on the lookout for taxis driving through residential areas and off their routes. There have been seven cases recently across these police precincts and we suspect it may be the same men. Residents should contact their local police station immediately,” he says.

Wynberg police spokesperson Warrant Officer Silvino Davids confirms the cases in the Wynberg police precinct, which includes parts of Constantia and Kenilworth.

He explains in the first case, two men robbed the complainant and in the second case a man and a woman were the robbers.

“Both reports indicate it is a white Toyota taxi but they cannot remember which model. These robberies occur mostly after the peak hours and in side roads off Main Road. The victims are threatened with a knife,” he says
