Robbery thwarted by police chase

Four men were arrested following a high-speed car chase in Strandfontein on Friday.

Strandfontein police arrested the men – aged between 27 and 35 years – under suspicion that they were driving a stolen vehicle, says police spokesperson Constable Zandile Marashula.

“Early this morning officers received information about eight suspicious men in two cars – a blue Toyota Corolla and a silver Hyundai – at a filling station in Wave Crest. The suspects were believed to be waiting for a cigarette delivery van,” says Marashula.

The officers arrived at the garage and when the suspects noticed them they fled. “A high-speed chase ensued and one of the suspected vehicles drove down Strandfontein Road towards Grassy Park. The driver then turned into the Nature Reserve,” she says.

Several police cars joined the pursuit, including the Cape Town canine unit.

The suspects were arrested near the Nature Reserve and the members recovered the Toyota Corolla which was believed to have been stolen in Brackenfell earlier this month.

The four suspects will appear in the Mitchell’s Plain Magistrates’ Court soon. It is further believed that one of the suspects can be linked to a British American Tobacco heist in Diepriver. The exact incident could not be determined at the time of going to print
