A range of fundraisers hosted at Belthorne Primary School in Athlone is a way for the school to cope with its financial difficulty.

The school will celebrate its half-century anniversary in less than two years and the years are starting to show.

Fundraising coordinator Zeenat Dawood says Belthorne Primary, which has 382 pupils, is in dire need of the help of the community to restore a sense of pride and dignity at the school.

“Currently we have an ongoing fundraiser which is done by means of hosting a civvies day every Friday at the school for pupils. However, we have two big events planned which we hope will bring in enough funds,” Dawood explains.

In recent years the school has fallen on hard times, and therefore requests a much-needed helping hand from members of the community and business organisations.

“Many children come from the townships. A significant number of our pupils come from children’s homes and many lack social skills or have disturbing behavioural problems and they are exempted from paying school fees. Unemployment and further job losses in our present economic downturn continue to be the main reason for parents failing to pay the annual school fees. Education is a human right which ought to be accessible to everyone, without any discrimination,” she says.

The school’s big fundraising event will be the spring fun fair in October. The school will also hold a showcase concert.

Dawood adds the proceeds from the events will go toward sprucing up facilities at the school.

“The school is in great need of maintenance and we are hoping that the money made at the various fund-raising initiatives will be sufficient to assist in making the school a safer and appealing place,” she says.

Dawood says the fun fair which will be hosted at the school and plans are to organise it annually.

“Maintenance at the school will be an ongoing issue. That is why we intend to host it every year. However, we need sponsors to come on board to make the event a success,” she adds.

Money made during the fundraisers will go towards the completion of a vegetable garden, as well as a covering for an assembly area.

“At the moment assemblies are hosted in a classroom and it’s being done phase by phase. This is very time consuming. Having an assembly area will allow us to host a collective assembly.”

The school has urged businesses and residents to help with money or in kind.
