School toilets need just your coat of paint

The Grade 8 pupils of Wynberg High School are appealing to the community for help in beautifying their school’s toilet facilities.

People’s Post previously reported that the pupils have taken it upon themselves to improve their school’s ablution facilities (“Grade 8s prepare for DIY”, 7 April).

But they need the help of the community and local businesses.

Amina Pillay, a Grade 8 pupil, said earlier: “The toilet facilities are run-down and not a place I want to go into.”

A teacher at the school, Ellen Fedele, says the Grade 8s have asked to improve the school toilets as a grade project.

“The pupils use the facilities many times daily and ablution facilities need to be clean and hygienic for their sakes. Using facilities that have been upgraded even by a coat of new paint will enhance their school day in my opinion, both physically and spiritually,” Fedele says. They are in need of paint, paintbrushes, masks to cover their noses, overalls to cover their clothes and paint trays.

“Seeing their handiwork materialise literally onto a wall would be very satisfying. Using facilities that are fresh and sparkling would hopefully encourage the pupils to maintain the standard of “beauty” of the ablution blocks,” Fedele says.

She adds that having pride “in our school and general surroundings would be increased by beautifying our toilet facilities”.

“We want to show the other grades what can be achieved with simply an idea, working towards a common goal as a grade. The Grade 8s are new to the school but they have drive and ambition beyond their years,” she says.

Fedele says she is very proud of the Grade 8s for taking this on as a school initiative. “I do not have a homeroom class so was slotted in with the Grade 8s for grade meetings and am very happy that I did so,” she boasts.

“They are a cheerful and bright bunch of children and I believe that this is just the first of many projects that they will tackle successfully to help improve Wynberg High,” Fedele says.

The Grade 8s would like to tackle the refurbishment of the school bathrooms this term.

“We would like to request donations of paint and brushes for this project as well as mirrors and posters, new basins or anything else that the community would be so kind as to give to the school,” Fedele urges.
