See vision for Princess Vlei

2015-08-18 06:00

The draft concept development framework for the Greater Princess Vlei area has been completed.

Bridget Pitt, secretary of the Princess Vlei Forum, says they are pleased that the City of Cape Town has completed the framework and will hold an open day so that the public can view the plan and comment on it.

“This follows the successful campaign waged under the umbrella of the Princess Vlei Forum to prevent the building of a shopping mall on the banks of Princess Vlei,” Pitt says.

The open day will be held at the Retreat civic centre on Thursday from 16:00 to 20:00. Pitt says the plans will be presented, and City officials will be available to answer questions and record responses.

The open day will be followed by a Forum general meeting to discuss the plan in depth at the League of Friends of the Blind hall (corner of Klip and First roads in Grassy Park) on 27 August from 18:00 to 21:00.

Pitt says the concept development framework describes the overall vision for the development of the Greater Princess Vlei area into a recreation site.

“The Princess Vlei Forum has been motivated by two important objectives. First, to ensure that Princess Vlei is developed and protected as a site celebrating nature and heritage for all to enjoy; and second, to ensure that this transformation occurs with meaningful community engagement and consultation,” Pitt says.

She adds that the release of these draft plans is an important victory for their campaign, showing that the City has listened to the community and taken these views into account.

“We also welcome the opportunity to enable the community to comment on the plans, and to take forward the vision for Princess Vlei,” she says.

And the Forum encourages all those with an interest in Princess Vlei to attend these events, and make their views known.
