Eating healthy, but most importantly having the Lord in your life and serving Him with everything you have, everyday, are the keys to live a long and healthy life.

So says Andriana Maria “Mamma Jane” Felix from Silvertown, Athlone who celebrated her 100th birthday on Wednesday last week. She says it feels great to be this wise, not old, and gives all thanks and praise to the Lord.

Mamma Jane was born on 8 April 1915 in District Six. She later moved to Athlone after the forced removals from the District Six area.

She has 14 kids, of whom two are deceased. She also has 114 grandchildren, great grandchildren and great great grandchildren.

Mamma Jane boasts great health for someone who is a century old. She only has “a little high blood pressure”, but no cholesterol or any other serious health problems.

She only uses her reading glasses sometimes to read her favourite book, the Bible, and loves to listen to Radio Tygerberg.

Her favourite foods include sugar bean curry, homemade soup and bananas. And she still does needle work.

“As her grandchild I feel extremely blessed and highly favoured. My gran always said that she wanted to live to see 100,” says one of her granddaughters, Natasha Wilkinson.

“I fondly tell my friends that I’ll be their friend for life, because of my granny’s age and great genes that I hope I have inherited.”

She describes her grandmother as a generous and God-fearing person who never misses church and who believes one should love they neighbour.

“She’s very ladylike in the way she wears her dresses and is soft-spoken.”

According to Natasha the birthday milestone was celebrated with a prayer meeting on her grandmother’s actual birthday, a luncheon at the Baptist Church (of which she is the eldest church member) the day after her birthday and a big family bash this past Sunday.

Although she lives with some of her children, “she is very independent and self-sufficient. She needs assistance here and there as her legs are starting to give her problems, but prefers and is very capable of doing things for herself,” says Natasha
