World of Birds Wildlife Sanctuary and Monkey Park recently released a blue crane which was injured and had been stuck in a barbed wire fence on the R44.

Hendrik Louw, World of Birds’ hospital general manager, says the national bird was brought to them by a member of the public in December last year.

“With injuries to its knee and legs it was treated over the next few months by hospital staff.

“After a successful recovery a release site was chosen and on Sunday 24 May it was released in the Overberg area,” Louw says.

After spending the day on her own wandering next to an estuary, Louw says, a flock of blue cranes joined her during the evening to roost
