Step up for local wonders

The “greatest show (and tell) on earth” will bring together techies, tinkerers, hobbyists and makers for Cape Town’s first Maker Faire, which is part of the third annual Open Design Festival.

Part science fair, part trade fair, the Maker Faire is an all-ages gathering of tech enthusiasts, crafters, educators, engineers, science clubs, authors, artists, students and commercial exhibitors. All of these “makers” will come to Maker Faire from Thursday to Sunday to show what they have made and to share what they have learned.

Garreth Bloor, mayoral committee member for tourism, events and economic development, says: “This is an excellent platform for entrepreneurs to showcase their creative and innovative projects. The ‘show and tell’ format of the fair will help to stimulate conversations about projects and will also help to facilitate the sharing of ideas and peer-to-peer learning.

“Every day we throw away items that we all could, with a little creativity, mould into reusable items.”
