Support the shelter, not the individual

2015-07-14 06:01

It’s winter and you wonder how to help that homeless person in the street. Unfortunately, the casual donation, however well intentioned, rarely helps the person get off the streets.

It may actually help him/her remain there.

There are a number of great organisations in our city which do a sterling job in working with the homeless to provide sustainable, long-term solutions. One is the Haven in Greenpoint where Pastor Jerry and his team do excellent work.

They are in need of help to refurbish facilities at their premises in Napier Street, which is home to dozens who would otherwise have nowhere to go. Any donation, however large of small, will help them improve conditions for people staying there. So to help responsibly this winter please consider giving them your support.
