Mitchell’s Plain police have issued a warning to residents to safeguard their cars.

“Theft out of cars is one of the crime areas of concern. We need our community members to be vigilant and help us by applying the following guidelines to safeguard their cars,” says police spokesperson Lieutenant Ian Williams.

. When you park your car, make sure that all doors are locked and windows are closed.

. Do not leave valuables like cellphones, wallets, laptops, handbags or money in your car.

. If you must, rather leave valuables in the boot of your car.

. At night park where the lighting is good.

. Park your car in a safe and secure place to minimise the risk of theft.

. Do not give strangers lifts.

. Do not leave your car unlocked, even if you think that you will only be away for a minute.

. Devices such as gearlocks and car alarms can also be deterrents for thieves
