The University of Cape Town (UCT) is hosting the 10th Keith Grainger Memorial UCT Open Squash Championships. The tournament brings together 34 international participants from over 11 countries, as well as seven men and women ranked among the top 20 in South Africa, according to a press release.

It started on Saturday and ends on Friday at the Sports Centre on UCT’s upper campus. The top UCT players have also entered the tournament and there will be great interest in seeing how they perform.

Alexandra Fuller, UCT women’s no.1 (ranked 95th in the world and 2013 UCT Sportsperson of the Year) is seeded in the main draw. Mighael Lombard, UCT men’s no.1, will have to fight his way through the qualifying rounds to progress into the main draw.

Defending SA champion Siyoli Waters (ranked 33th in the world) is the no.1 seed in the women’s division and Angus Gillams from England, ranked 120th in the world, is the first seed in the men’s division.

The tournament is named after Keith Grainger, a UCT student who died from cancer.

He contributed to squash at UCT between 1999 and 2001, despite relying on a prosthetic leg.

He died in September 2001 during his third year.

The tournament raises funds for awareness around cancer prevention.

Kerr Rogers, sports coordinator at UCT, says: “The UCT Squash Club has encouraged the local community to get involved and support the event on and off the court. Spectators will be guaranteed plenty of drama on the court, with SA’s best players matching their skills against players ranked among the top 100 in the world. All donations received will be handed over to the Cancer Association of South Africa at the prizegiving on Friday.”
