Two men were arrested after being found in possession of unlicensed firearms.

On Tuesday 15 September at 13:00, Mitchell’s Plain police were doing patrols on the corner of Mopanie and Maroela streets, Eastridge, when officers spotted a suspicious-looking man walking in the street.

When the man noticed officers approaching him, he ran across a nearby open field.

The officers gave chase and saw the suspect drop a firearm on the field.

Police recovered a Taurus 9mm pistol with ammunition.

The 22-year-old man was apprehended and appeared in court on related charges.

In an unrelated incident, thorough investigative work led to the arrest of a 20-year-old man on Tuesday morning, after receiving information that the suspect was allegedly involved in a car hijacking and business robbery in Tafelsig and Strandfontein the night before.

It is alleged that on Monday at 23:30 the suspects hijacked a man and woman driving a green VW Microbus in Kilimanjaro Street, Tafelsig.

Both victims were driven around Mitchell’s Plain.

The suspects filled the microbus with R50 petrol and drove off without paying.

The suspects then drove to a garage in Spine Road, Strandfontein, where they allegedly robbed a business.

The men took several items worth R500 before fleeing the scene.

The vehicle was recovered and one of the suspects was arrested. He has already appeared in court.

Police are still looking for the second suspect in relation to the hijacking, business robbery and abduction charges.

The investigation is ongoing
