Two men killed, possibly gang-related

2015-05-19 06:00

Tensions remain high following two confirmed murders in Rocklands.

Two men were killed within 40 minutes of each other as bullets flew on Monday morning last week.

At about 07:50 the Mitchell’s Plain police responded to a shooting at the corner of Robin and Weltevreden roads.

On arrival the police discovered a 35-year-old man lying on the pavement with multiple bullet wounds to his body, says police spokesperson Sergeant Jerome Voegt.

“The deceased was declared dead on the scene by paramedics. It is alleged that the man was standing on the street corner when unknown suspects in a Toyota Quantum fired several shots at him, killing him,” he says.

In the second incident in Spine Road, a police officer attended to a complaint that a taxi driver had been shot at 08:30.

“A 36-year-old man was found. It is alleged that the deceased stopped his minibus taxi in Spine Road to pick up commuters when he was shot by an unknown suspect. The deceased was declared dead on the scene by paramedics,” Voegt says.

The motive for both incidents are unknown at this stage.

However, Voegt says the shootings are suspected to be gang-related.

He confirms that although tensions between the gangs remain high, no further murders have been reported.

No arrests in either cases have been made.

Anyone with information on either incident is urged to call the investigating officer Detective Constable Welcome Nkenke on 079 154 5133 or 082 777 8076
