Concerned Lakeview residents claim the drains or manholes in Langevlei Park are being used as dumping sites.
“It is disgusting and appalling,” says a resident who asked to remain anonymous in fear of victimisation.
“We are nearing the festive season and it is more important now to pull our area right,” she says.
She blames her fellow residents for the dumping problem, and requests that the City council cleans these dumping sites as they are an eyesore.
“It is summer and all kinds of pests are breeding there and children are also playing there, so we are facing diseases being picked up,” she says.
She adds that Tuesdays are also rubbish collection days in Lakeview and more and more trolley pushers with overloaded trolleys are walking through the area.
“They sit on corners and sort out their dirt and then they just leave whatever they don’t want there,” she says. She is now urging residents to come together to find a long-term solution for the dumping issue.
“I would like for us all to meet to find a solution to this problem, so that we can deter people from dumping or littering at the park,” she urges.
Meanwhile, another resident has thanked the local ward councillor and council for cutting the grass and tree branches at Langevlei. “Our community needs to be educated, as they are using Langevlei as a dumping zone. We are trying to plan activities to educate the young kids in the area with what we have available,” he says.
He adds that the signage is not in a good state and some parts of the vlei need to be fenced off to deter access to the vlei so that people cannot use Langevlei Park as a dumping ground anymore. “We would like to see families use it for relaxing, as well as a bicycle road for kids to ride around. Make it more of a family park,” he says.
Ward councillor Kevin Southgate says the dumping is an ongoing problem at the Vlei which the City is addressing.
“We are calling on residents to be vigilant and to report anyone who is dumping. They can take down the registration of the vehicles in which people are using to offload their dump and report this to the City,” he says. Southgate says that he has requested additonal boulders be erected at the park to deter dumping.
