Vredehoek gets new park

2015-09-29 06:00

It’s going to be playtime in Vredehoek as a new park is in the pipeline.

The park, on a piece of unused public space on the corner of Mill Street and Virginia Avenue, is expected to boost safety in the area and link the Mill Street skate park, says ward councillor Dave Bryant.

“Currently the area is being used for anti-social activities and with the skate park located next door, it would make sense to have a small play park for younger children close by,” he says.

The skate park was opened in August last year, but residents previously reported concerns over vagrancy at the site, leaving locals feeling unsafe and concerned about the health implications of the site (“Skate park safety squabble”, People’s Post, 24 September 2013).

The design of the skate park restricts access, as a 4m-high see-through fence and an access control system regulate use.

Funding for the first phases of what is being dubbed Virginia Park will come out of money allocated for park improvements from this year’s ward allocation budget, Bryant says.

“The first phase will be to erect secure palisade fencing to secure the area and so that safety gates can be installed to prevent children from exiting directly on to Mill Street. Once the first phase is complete we can improve the surface and plant grass and install play equipment,” he says.

Lockable gates will be installed once the fencing has been erected to ensure safety. There are also plans to establish a friends group to help manage the park, says Bryant
