Wanted man arrested with gun

2015-09-01 06:00

Officers arrested a Rocklands man for possession of an unlicenced firearm and presumed stolen property on Monday last week.

In the early hours of Monday morning Mitchell’s Plain police responded to a complaint of a stolen car, which had been stolen in Ionian Street, Rocklands.

Police members spotted the Toyota Conquest at the corner of Park Avenue and Westpoort Road with four suspects inside the car, says police spokesperson Sergeant Jerome Voegt.

“A high-speed chase ensued and the suspects drove down Varkensvlei Road, Phillipi towards Ottery. The suspect’s car stopped near a well-known restaurant in Ottery where all four suspects jumped out of the car. One of the men opened fire on officers who were in close pursuit,” says Voegt.

The officers returned fire and managed to arrest one of the suspects. The man had in his possession a 9mm Beretta pistol.

He is also a wanted suspect in connection with a separate murder incident.

No-one was injured in the shoot-out.

The other three men are still at large.

Voegt says officers will keep a zero-tolerance stance toward those who attack them and leave no stones unturned to ensure perpetrators are brought to book.

The 31-year-old man who was arrested appeared in court on Wednesday last week on charges of attempted murder, possession of a prohibited firearm and attempted murder. The case has been postponed until tomorrow.

The accused remains in custody.

The man will appear in court on both charges on the same day.
