Water meter reader robbed on the job

2015-09-29 06:00

Two people were the victims of armed robbers in Athlone on Friday, say local police.

A man, who was on duty reading water meters in Gatesville, was robbed at knife point on Friday after two unknown men asked him for money.

The victim, after saying that he did not have money for them, was threatened when the suspects drew knives and proceeded to search the water meter reader.

They took the cash that he did have as well as the water meter he was using to do his job.

The suspects fled on foot.

On Friday evening at about 18:30, a woman was robbed of her handbag by another two unknown suspects on the corner of Sixth Avenue and Belgravia Road.

The woman was isolated by the two men when the incident took place.

One of the suspects then allegedly motioned to take out a weapon, which caused the woman to drop her handbag.

After she dropped the bag, the other suspect took the bag, but was pushed away by the woman before she fled on foot.

The suspects chased her, but to no avail.

They managed to steal the victim’s watch, as well as cash, jewellery and clothing which were in the bag.

No arrests had been made at the time of going to print.
