A family living in Rietbok Avenue, Lotus River are at their wits’ end due to a water leak in front of their house.

Discovered during February, the leak has not yet been fixed. Homeowner Avril Cedras says her complaints and pleas to have the pipe fixed are falling on deaf ears.

“We discovered water bubbling near the outside water meter on a Saturday morning during February. We reported it immediately, but still nothing has happened,” an exasperated Cedras says.

According to her, the issue was reported at the water works call centre, but the problem has not been fixed yet.

“It’s really frustrating because the water has been running non-stop since then and it smells as well. We are encouraged to save water all the time and I reported this issue immediately when I saw it, but still nothing has been done. How can the municipality preach one message but not action it themselves?” she asks.

Cedras says she has made many trips to the rent office in Pinelands, but whenever she gets there “they give the same response all the time: We are looking into it”.

“I have made many calls to the call centre as well, but still no joy. Instead of speaking to a real person you are transferred from one automated response to the other. I just want to get this leak fixed.”

She adds she is “fed up because no consultant has come out yet”.

“The day after I reported the leak, they told me somebody would come to fix it. I am still waiting. It’s really unfair because some days I sit without water and my laundry and dishes pile up,” she says.

Cedras adds since the leakage was reported, they have been left without water for a week already.

“There was a week where my water was off completely and my house looked a mess,” she adds.

Cedras says when she called to follow up on the progress of a plumber or consultant coming to the property to fix the leak, she was told her reference numbers were incorrect.

After following up with the City of Cape Town, they could not provide comment at the time of going to print.

“Unfortunately water and sanitation officials have not yet been able to conclude their investigation into this issue before the deadline provided. We will, however, endeavour to resolve the complaint in the coming week,” the City of Cape Town said in an email to People’s Post.
