We are not all the same

Over decades of serving on school governing bodies, ratepayers’ associations, neighbourhood watches and community police forums I have concluded that people are not all the same. Besides what the Torah, Bible and Quran say about humanity, it is clear that there are people of all religions, cultures, ethnic groups and all walks of life who love doing good work that benefits others. On the other hand, there are people who do not give a damn.

The story “Park burned in arson” (People’s Post, 11 August) was sad for many reasons. It was sad because of all the love and effort that went into the struggle and hard work to make the Katrina Harris Close Park in New Woodlands so beautiful.

It was sad because people, young and old, enjoyed sitting under the lapa on a hot day. It was sad because everyone lost a beautiful, free addition to the park and no-one gained from the destruction.

Very often when people commit crimes they love to blame apartheid or their poor socialisation. In this case there are no excuses. Sometimes people are just to blame.

The Torah, Bible and Quran emphasise that you “do not hurt others so that no-one may hurt you”.

The person who burnt down this beautiful park may not know it right now, but sometime in the future something bad will happen to him. This is the irony of life.

May God Almighty refresh those provoked residents with renewed energy so that they will not be discouraged
