What a waste on kids’ field

2015-08-04 06:00

I sit here with the smell of dog excrement in my nostrils as I have spent the last 15 minutes cleaning and washing my shoes to get rid of the foul matter caked on them.

I am a coach for the Fish Hoek Football Club’s u.11B side and have just returned from our Tuesday night practice on the FHFC fields in Fish Hoek. This is where I stood on the excrement.

This is not the first time that I have had to deal with dog waste on these fields. I have now taken to walking the field before practice to ensure that they are not polluted. If I find dog waste I, or one of the other coaches, pick it up with whatever materials we have on hand, and dump it in a waste bin.

Executing this distasteful task is better than stepping in it or having to assist a player in cleaning his boots.

I am a dog owner myself and understand the rationale behind owning dogs so I am not against dog ownership or dog walking in public spaces. However, having to deal with dog waste on a regular basis has made me consider adding my voice to that, ever-increasing it seems, group who want to see dogs banned from public spaces.

I am utterly and totally disgusted by people who allow their dogs to befoul a public space, especially one that is in use by children. The dog waste has to be picked up in the end so who do they think is going to do it?

I believe that cleaning up after an animal that has defecated in a public space is an act of consideration and of responsibility toward other users.

I therefore add my voice to the regular appeals to this group to clean up after their animals. If this behaviour continues I will reluctantly join the call to ban dogs from outdoor areas in use by the public
