Wheels on bus plan fall off

Over a year after announcing the intention to introduce a new MyCiti bus route to the Bo-Kaap, the plan seems to have stalled.

The route, which includes narrow roads and steep gradients, was set to run with specially commissioned MyCiTi minibuses.

The route was expected to begin in Wale Street, continue along Yusuf Drive, Voetboog Road and Upper Bloem Street before going on to Adderley, Strand, Darling and Keizergracht streets (“The road forward”, People’s Post, 10 April 2014).

Sections of the route were previously served by bus and minibus taxis, and it is not practical to use nine-metre MyCiTi buses because of the narrow roads, steep gradients or limited demand.

The route was planned to be operated using six-metre minibuses.

No turningBut the provision of a feeder service in the Bo-Kaap poses a number of challenges, says Brett Herron, mayoral committee member for transport.

“The most difficult of these is the fact that the streets in the Bo-Kaap are very narrow and that the nine-metre low-floor buses cannot be accommodated on these roads, nor is there space to turn around,” he says.

“The City is currently investigating the role of the minibus taxi industry to assist to fill in these key gaps as part of a holistic and hybrid transport solution.

“The council is also currently reviewing different and innovative ways of reaching areas that either have geometrical challenges to accommodate our nine-metre feeder buses or have low and irregular demand to warrant a regular service with a bigger bus,” he says.About time

He says the buses skirt around Bo-Kaap, which means residents have to walk into the city centre to catch a bus.

Other bus services and taxis have been taken off the routes, which is especially problematic for children who need to travel to school, he says
