Being around plants helps people concentrate better in the home or workplace.

Studies show that tasks performed while in calming nature are done better and with greater accuracy, making for a higher quality result. Moreover, being outside in nature can improve and attention span by 20%.

In this way people are rewarded for their effort in keeping their parks or gardens beautiful.

To make sure that this effort gets noticed the Friends of Harfield Parks are holding a garden competition.

The competition aims to create awareness in the village of the importance of greening the area and is a way to showcase some of the gardens hidden behind the 6-foot walls.

Gail Brown, chairperson of the Friends, says: “We are about greening the environment and making it as beautiful as it can be. There are people who do exceptionally well and they are never recognised for it. We want to appreciate them as a community and to encourage others to do that as well.”

This is the first time such a competition is being held and the Friends are hoping to do it annually.

The Friends, Norgarb Properties, the Harfield Village Association and Hart Nursery are the main sponsors. The Oggi Shop, Oblivion, Banana Jam, Graze, Fat Harry’s, First on 2nd, Milk and Honey, Stoneage, Heartwood Trees and Craigrownie Guest House will also help or sponsor prizes.

All the funds generated by the competition will go towards the cleaning and greening of Harfield and its parks.

There are five categories in the competition: Traditional garden, pavement garden, vegetable garden, patio garden and complex garden. Each category winner will get prizes. The overall winner will get a 5-star weekend at a guest house in Sea Point, a R1000 voucher from Hart Nursery and a trophy. Other prizes include R500 nursery vouchers, a wooden planting box, baby trees, sun hats, dinner and wine vouches, gardening hand manicures and pots.

Entries close at the end of August. Judging will be done in September and there will be a tour of the winning gardens that culminates in the prizegiving on 4 October in Purley Park. Norgarb Properties will host a tea for participants.

Brown and Pam Hart from Hart Nursery will be the judges and will look for gardens where they can see a passion for gardening.

“We believe this is far more important than manicured lawns. We want to see the passion and the creativity that the people have for their gardens. We want to see immaculately cut lawns. We want to see an effort that people put in their gardens to outshine the others. Already we have had friends challenging each other with pavement gardens, so we are looking forward to seeing the results,” says Brown.

Entry forms are available from the Oggi Shop and Norgarb Properties in 2nd Avenue. Or you can email harfied.parks@
